Let me start by saying that Whitesmoke costs $79.95 per year for the premium version.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about this proofreading tool. Here are some of the pros I experienced using Whitesmoke:

• It’s easy to use right in your web browser or as an add-on in Word. The interface is straightforward.
• The grammar, punctuation, and spelling checkers all work fairly well. I liked that it flagged potential issues and offered suggestions.
• The plagiarism checker comes included, which is a nice bonus. I tested it out on some blog posts and it caught copied text from other sites.
• There are some helpful video tutorials that teach writing skills. I learned a few new grammar rules!

However, there were also some significant downsides:

• I could only check sections of 10,000 characters at once. For book manuscripts, this got annoying having to run small sections one by one.
• You can’t use it offline at all. As someone who writes in places without internet sometimes, this hampered my workflow.

For my own writing (don’t ask me what my pen name is), I’ve been toying with the idea of writing a children’s book for some time. So far, I’ve identified several key elements that I have to do first, like choosing my target audience, incorporating engaging elements, and (of course) the illustrations.

Now if YOU want to publish a children’s book, you can do so either with self-publishing or traditional publishing.

I’m going with self-publishing, because it’s a great way to start, and it’s no longer difficult or too expensive to do.

But there’s a lot more to do, and in this article I’ll break it all for you.

Note: I’m not getting into the publishing side too much in this article. Instead, it focuses more on the writing.

With that in mind, let’s get into it.

Prep Work: What to Do BEFORE Writing a Children’s Book

Before we get started, it’s important to do a little prep work, and answer some questions before we put all that time and effort into producing a children’s book. Some of the considerations we should make include:

• Ensure Parents Will Want to Buy Your Book: It’s important to ensure parents will want to buy your book to market to younger audiences. Otherwise, you’re left with a book no one will want to buy, because even if the kids will like it, they don’t have purchasing power.

You might already know that paperbacks are the most popular format for children’s books. They can easily be sold on platforms like Amazon or even in physical stores. 

But here’s something to consider – children’s ebook usage is actually on the rise! 

Parents’ preferences are shifting towards ebooks (thank you iPads), or they may not have any preference between ebook and print formats. This change in mindset could work in your favor if you’re planning to self-publish your book.

Now, ebooks come with their own set of perks. They’re useful for promotions, and you can send them out for cost-effective review requests, which can help spread the word about your book. But hold on a second, there’s a study from the University of Michigan that suggests ebook storytime might be less effective than physical book storytime. 

Why? It appears parents focus more on the technology than the content. That’s something to think about.

So, while the popularity of ebooks is on the rise, physical children’s books are likely to remain a hot commodity in the foreseeable future. It’s all about finding the right balance and catering to both types of readers. 

Consider offering your children’s book in both formats to reach a wider audience and maximize your potential for success.

Step 2: Figure Out Who You’re Writing For

This is a crucial step when it comes to writing your masterpiece – knowing your target category and age group. Trust me, this can make all the difference in how well your book is received.

For instance, Board Books should have a good message and subtle education, while Young Adult books should touch on themes that resonate with older kids.

Speaking of Young Adult books, it’s worth noting that they might not always be considered children’s books. However, some traditional publishers may still classify them as such. 

So, it’s essential to be aware of the distinctions when marketing your book.

Step 3: Choose a Catchy Title

Let’s chat about another crucial aspect of your book – choosing a winning title. Remember, your title should guide your writing, but don’t be afraid to improve or change it later on as your story evolves.

In my opinion, Deathly Hollows is the absolute best Harry Potter book. As the last book in the series, it neatly ties together the entire story that the previous six created. For me, it’s the one that grips at my heartstrings the most. You can really feel the emotions run raw as the our trio of heroes (Harry, Ron, Hermione) make their way through the past to discover the best chance at stopping He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. It was hard not to put this book at number one. Seriously. I believe this book (the sixth installment) to be the most balanced book in the entire series. You get this throwback to the earlier books through some great lighthearted moments such as the Slug Club. And Rowling really starts to explore the romance side of things here too.

But then…you dive into the darkness of the Potterverse. From the return and story behind Tom Riddle, to learning how Voldemort can be finally defeated, to the shocking plot twist within… This book is amazing.

The third book in the Harry Potter series does exactly what the second book doesn’t. It really grinds into the true nature of the characters. Prisoner of Azkaban truly laid the foundation for the rest of the series. This was also the last of the “smaller books”. With the release of Goblet of Fire (the fourth installment), the book’s page count jumped over 300 pages. And since Prisoner of Azkaban masterfully developed the basis of the characters, more could be focused on the story in future titles.

Other than just the character development, the story was phenomenal. Although this book has less direct involvement from the Dark Lord, there’s a well-defined narrative that really helps the characters mature into some of the darker elements of the subsequent novels.

Ugh. So this selection has me torn. I really wanted to put this book higher on the list. And yet, I can find a good reason to put it further down. Honestly, when compared to the other books, it just seems slow. Like the story really isn’t really moving. Sure things are happening but like at a snail’s pace.

However, that particular reason is why I want it higher. The slow logging of Order really embraces the plot. It written to be slow because that’s what going on. It’s about planning and events that will ultimately build this war against the dark forces. Not to mention, the book has one of the most dastardly and most-hated villains of all time: Dolores Umbridge.

Ok. Hear me out. Out of all the Harry Potter books, this one is the most fun to me. Not necessarily the best written or the most complex, but fun. And that’s all due to the Triwizard Tournament! The different events, puzzles, and challenges Harry has to endure are just nuts! And it really gets your blood pumping wondering what’s next.

Another aspect of this book I really enjoyed was the introduction of the other wizarding schools. There’s a whole wizarding world in the Harry Potter universe, and this was our first real glimpse into something other than Hogwarts.

This is the book that started it all. Yer a wizard, Harry! I just remember reading this book when I was younger and imagining Hagrid coming to get me next! Mind you, I wasn’t forced to live in a cupboard under the stairs, but might have volunteered to do so if we had one. Sorcerer’s Stone as a standalone book is a home run. No doubt about it.

The main reason why it’s towards the bottom of my list is that…this book is just too childish for me compared to the others. Don’t get me wrong, it’s supposed to be. But just like the characters mature throughout the series, so did my tastes.

Although I call this the worst Harry Potter book, it isn’t a bad book by any means. Just compared to the rest of the series… It gets overshadowed. And here’s why I think so.

It really doesn’t add to much depth to the character’s. As the series progresses, each book adds more into the character development. With this one…not so much. It’s like a rehashing of the first book. I think if the Harry Potter series stopped at three books, this would have been a more effective an installment. But in a full seven book series, Chamber of Secrets becomes a weak link.

What’s the difference between the Sorcerer’s Stone and the Philosopher’s Stone?

When searching for the first Harry Potter book, you’re likely to come across two versions.

1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
2. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

In essence, they are the exact same book. They only have different titles. The original title for the book is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. However, J. K. Rowling changed the title to Sorcerer’s Stone for American audiences because she thought the US would associate Philosopher’s Stone with some old, boring teacher (i.e. Socrates, Plato–which aren’t not so boring to me) and not magic.

Turned out to be a great move on Rowling’s part.

Hogwarts House Explained

In the Potterverse, Hogwarts students are sorted into respective houses during their first year welcoming feast. These houses are representative of the four original Hogwarts founders being:

• Godric Gryffindor
• Helga Hufflepuff
• Rowena Ravenclaw
• Salazar Slytherin

Now, as far as the books go, you’ll see some common trends. Good guys come from Gryffindor. Bad guys from Slytherin.

But that’s not always the case. Each house values different traits for their members to have. Let’s take a look.

• Gryffindor- Courage, Honor, Bravery, Chivalry, and Reserve. The mascot for Gryffindor is the Lion and is closely affiliated with the element of fire.
• Hufflepuff- Hard Work, Justice, Loyalty, Patience, and Hospitality. The mascot for Hufflepuff is the Badger and is closely affiliated with the element of earth.
• Ravenclaw- Intelligence, Wisdom, Logic, and Creativity. The mascot for Ravenclaw is the Eagle and is closely affiliated with the element of air.
• Slytherin- Ambition, Leadership, Cunning, Drive, and Resourcefulness. The mascot for Slytherin is the serpent and is closely affiliated with the element of water.

The house sorting process is one of the most anticipated parts of each book. It’s performed by using a magical hat known as the Sorting Hat which when placed upon the head can read into a student’s personality and destiny. Once the Sorting Hat’s got a good read, it loudly proclaims for all to hear which house the student will be sorted into.

This doesn’t mean that the student doesn’t have any choice in the matter. During Harry Potter’s sorting, the hat was torn between Gryffindor and Slytherin. Potter would have made a wonderful candidate for Slytherin. He’s pureblood wizard, a born leader, and a parseltongue (aka he talks to snakes). But during his sorting, Harry could only think one thing….Not Slytherin. The hat honored his request, and Harry Potter found his home in Gryffindor.

If you’re a novelist and haven’t heard of Scrivener yet, you totally need to check it out! It’s seriously the best mobile writing app out there, especially for all my fellow iPhone and iPad users. This app is super organized and has great ready-made templates for all sorts of genres and layouts. 

Okay, so I know it has a bit of a steep learning curve, but don’t worry! There are tons of free tutorials online to help you out. Trust me, it’s sooo worth it. With Scrivener for iOS, you’ll be planning, organizing with drag-and-drop, highlighting words, and arranging everything on a virtual corkboard in no time.

The coolest thing? You can totally transfer your work between devices using Dropbox, or export it to all these fancy formats like DOCX, EPUB, MOBI, PDF, HTML, or even Multi-Markdown. I mean, come on, how awesome is that?

But, like, there’s this one tiny downside. The mobile app costs $19.99, which is a bit pricey, I know. And if you want it on your macOS or Windows devices, you’ll need to buy separate licenses. Ugh!

Now, to my Android peeps, don’t feel left out! You can still try Novlr, a browser-based app that’s super cool and works on any mobile device as long as you have internet access.

• Best for: general writing, including business documents, journalism, student works, etc.

Let me tell you, Microsoft Word is like, THE industry standard text editor we all know and love! It’s super versatile and user-friendly. Plus, it runs super smooth on both iOS and Android devices, so you can whip up gorgeous, professional-looking documents in a bunch of different formats. 

Now, Word is totes perfect for general writing, like those memos, email drafts, and print-ready docs we can’t escape from. But, just a little heads-up, it might not be the best choice for novel writing. I know, bummer! 

Its organization game isn’t as strong as, say, Scrivener or Ulysses, but still, it’s got our backs for most writing tasks.

Oh, and if you’re all about spelling and grammar, you should know that Word’s checker isn’t as powerful as ProWritingAid or Grammarly. But hey, nobody’s perfect, right?

I feel you – MS Word can be a little pricey. But the good news is that lots of us have access to it at no extra cost through our work or school! So, we can still get our write on without breaking the bank.

• Best for: General writing for those on a budget, as well as collaborative projects

Google Docs is your go-to option for both Android and iOS users. If you’re on a budget and don’t need proofreading, novel writing, or offline writing capabilities, Google Docs has got you covered.

You can tweak headers, spacing, and fonts—basically, everything you’d expect from a pro word processor. Plus, it autosaves your work and keeps track of your version history. What’s really cool is how it shines when it comes to real-time collaboration, making it perfect for co-authors, bloggers, and even ghostwriters.

Let’s face it. Sometimes, we just need a good lamp at a good price. Nothing too fancy, and definitely not too expensive. This lamp is just right. Our best budget floor lamp is the Simple Designs Home Mother-Daughter floor lamp. But just because it’s cheap, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have some useful features.

Adjustable Gooseneck Reading Lamp

• The reading lamp is on a bendable gooseneck allowing you to direct light specifically for reading. The smaller lamp is on a power switch of its own making it completely independent of the taller lamp. It’s no wonder I consider this the best floor lamp with reading light.

Plastic Shades

Factors to consider when purchasing a reading lamp for the floor

Make sure to do your research before purchasing any floor lamps. This can prevent a lot of headache and regret. No need to be left in the dark on these issues.

What do Voltage Ratings Mean?

Is your lamp rated for 110V? Maybe 220V? Why is this so important? Most places in the United States operate off of a 110V power grid. So… when you plug in a device rated for 220V, you will not receive the full capacity of the product. Not only that, but the device will pull more electricity in order to try and run it.

This can lead to an increase in power bills. The device may begin to fail over time as well. You see, with reduced voltages, a higher current must be drawn in to compensate. This can start to break down the electrical components of your lamp leading to failure.

Plugging a 110V device into a 220V socket is much more spectacular. The 110V can receive up to 4x the amount of electricity it is rated for. An exploding light bulb is a minimal effect. This can cause severe damage to the lamp itself. Your lamp may no longer be able to work. On top of that… it’s a huge fire safety risk.

Lumens vs Watts

What exactly are lumens? According to lumens.com, lumens are:

“a unit of luminous flux in the International System of Units, that is equal to the amount of light given out through a solid angle by a source of one-candela intensity radiating equally in all directions.”

In layman’s terms, lumens equate to brightness!

But wait… doesn’t watts mean brightness too? In short, no. Watts are actually a measurement of how much energy is used. You see, back in the day, there were very limited styles of lightbulbs. Pretty much two categories.

1. It worked.
2. It didn’t work.

Actually, it was mostly just incandescent bulbs. As these bulbs, drew more energy they were able to get brighter. Thus more watts… more light.

Nowadays, things are different. With the introduction of LED bulbs to the playground, lumens and watts have begun to separate themselves. Ideally, you want to find higher lumens with a lower wattage rating.

It’s definitely become much easier with the assortment of bulbs out there.

Bulb Types for Floor Lamps

Luckily for us, there are many alternatives out there to standard incandescent bulbs.

Halogen

• Halogen bulbs are quickly becoming the standard for replacing existing incandescent bulbs. Out of all the light bulbs types, Halogen bulbs emit the most natural light to that similar to actual daylight. They are more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, but are more expensive and burn hotter.

Fluorescent

• These bulbs you will normally find in office and commercial buildings. They produce a large amount of flat blue light and last a very long time. These are an economical choice for brightening up basements and attics.

CFL

• These bulbs–although more expensive– are a good choice of a lightbulb for household use. They on average last ten times longer than incandescent bulbs and save 4 times the amount of energy. When these bulbs do burn out, remember they can be recycled.

LED

• These are the most recent lights to hit the market. More importantly, they are the most efficient lightbulb in terms of energy and tend to last next to forever. However, there are some drawbacks with these bulbs. At the moment, LEDs can only provide directional light emissions. This means they need to be clustered or provided with reflective guides in order to illuminate a whole room.

And truth be told, this list doesn’t need another recliner (although I do have one more that is cheaper) because this thing does it all. Ok. I’m going to go on record to say this. Everyone loves a big ole Papasan chair–even if you think you don’t or never sat in one, you do. With that out of the way, let’s just talk about how awesome this round reading chair is. This Rattan Wicker chair is made up of extra sturdy rattan weaving. Growing up in the late 80s and early 90s, I essentially lived my life in bean bag chairs. Not one like this though, which is an excellent reading chair for teenagers. Okay, I will admit, I love these barrel-style accent chairs. I see them and I just have to sit down and experience that feeling of being hugged by a chair. So I had a chair like these in college…before I broke it. Don’t judge, I had a few too many potato chips back in those days. Okay so I had a recliner option above, but that one was extremely expensive, and I can see how some people might not need all the bells and whistles that that one provided. So instead, I present to you the Homall Recliner Chair, which is extremely comfortable, especially when reclined, and boasts a stylish, minimalist design. Which, of course, I love. The best part is this price, you’d be surprised at the sturdy construction that you’ll find with this product, given how cheap it is. But it really is a solid construction. Best Reading Chairs Buyer’s Guide–Everything You Should Consider

There are number of factors you should consider when choosing the best reading chair for your home. As much as I want to say just buy the most comfortable one…. That would be terrible advice.

Because buying a chair is more than just buying comfort. You’re literally investing money into your entire home!

That being said, let’s go over some key attributes to consider when buying a reading chair.

Size of the Reading Chair

Sorry guys, size matters. When it comes to your reading chair, of course.

You need to know just much space you can/need to afford for your chair. Me, in my apartment, can’t go off and grab the largest most comfy chair I can find. I have limited space restrictions. I still need to put a sweet lamp and reading light in among other things. But sometimes t might be best to go a little bigger. If you have a large living room with some tiny little chair in the corner…it may be mistaken for the dunce corner and not a reading nook.

Materials and Construction

This is critical. If you buy cheap, chances are you’ll get cheaper materials. Not to say that’s a bad thing. Sometimes you don’t need a super awesome chair. But let’s just say you need to make consideration for a larger weight capacity. I just don’t think a thin aluminum frame is going to hold 300 pounds. At that point you’ll want to consider a sturdy hardwood design.

But it’s not just the frame composition you need to be aware of. It’s the reading chair material covering. Are you opting for leather? Or cloth? Or a polyester blend? While cloth may be cheaper, it is more prone to staining, rips, and burns. Polyester has a nice balance to it; however, a bad poly blend can make the chair not very breathable.  And leather, while pretty tough to stain and a much longer chair life, is much more expensive and requires special maintenance.

There are other materials out there so be sure to consider your options.

Ideal Reading Chair Style Considerations

Here’s the thing…if you’re looking at a potential reading chair and saying, “Nah…that ain’t my style”, don’t buy the chair.

No matter how comfy it may be, you’re not going to be able to appreciate it as much. You might actually decide it was a giant waste of money. Try and find a chair that blends well with your current style. Or a style you’re currently building into. And if you’re into Feng Shui… you better do some research. It would be a shame for you to get one chair just to sell it later to find another.

Reclining or Non

This is another personal preference you need to look at. My best reading chair would not be a reclining chair. But…. That’s just me. If you want a recliner, more power to you!

Reclining options can be nice. They give you so much more mobility and even snoozing options–always good to snooze. But I’m not a fan because they are more difficult to clean, I’m always dropping my keys or phone down those little cracks, and they tend to be a bit heavier to move around.

Comfort

Last, but not least… comfort. If a chair hurts your back or is otherwise not fun to sit in–DON’T GET IT. That simple.

Ok. Picture this. Light can be represented on a rainbow scale.

You remember ROY G BIV from elementary school, right? If not… here’s a quick refresher.

R- Red

O- Orange

Y- Yellow

G- Green

B- Blue

I- Indigo

V- Violet

ROY G BIV is the order of the colors in a rainbow.

Now. Follow me here. Time to get our science on.

Science of Blue Light

Light has been observed to move in wave-like patterns. When represented on a graph, it looks a little something like this:

The upper most points are called the crests.

These crests are very important for determining wavelength. Because wavelengths are measured by the distance from one crest to another.

Back to those colors. It has been also observed that colors at the beginning of the rainbow– i.e. Red and Orange– have longer wavelengths.

That means that the waves are less intense due to a fewer number of waves transmitted in any given amount of time.

On the other hand, colors at the end of the rainbow– i.e. Blue, Indigo, and Violet– have much shorter wavelengths.

This means that these shorter wavelength colors are much more intense due to a higher number of waves transmitted in any given amount of time.

So, BLUE LIGHT is a high intensity, high energy form of light. But the most inconvenient part of this is… Blue light falls on the visible light spectrum (not all light is visible–different lesson for a different time).

And it’s becoming more and more common.

Common Sources of Blue Light Exposure

As I mentioned earlier, your favorite devices and gadgets may be causing more harm to you than you know.

You see, one of the most common sources of blue light is through LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes).

LEDs today are found pretty much everywhere. From flashlights, to light bulbs, to your television set. Why is that? Because they are a wonderful source of pure bright light.

Other common sources of blue light from LEDs come from:

• Cell phones
• Computers
• Tablets
• E-readers
• Digital Clocks
• Smart watches

Essentially, any gadget with a backlit screen. Now, you may not stare at your digital clock for hours on end. But cell phones, computers, tablets, and e-readers pose an actual credible risk for overexposure to blue light.

Blue Light- Advantages and Disadvantages

Now. blue light isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes it can be good for you. Let’s go over some of the differences between good blue light and bad blue light.

Good Blue Light

Regulates your Circadian Rhythm

• Blue light is actually extremely important in maintaining your circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is your body’s internal sleep/wake cycle. This is most effective when you receive blue light exposure during daytime hours. Prolonged exposure to blue light in the evening, however, can have an adverse effect. Too much blue light at nighttime– say from an e-reader– can actually mess with this cycle. Instead of reading to help you sleep, it can keep you awake and lead to daytime tiredness.​

Great for Psychological Well Being

• Blue light is also used for therapeutic purposes as well. Particularly for a syndrome known as SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder. This disorder is a type of depression that is related to the changing of the seasons. Blue light plays a major role in light therapy used to treat this.

Keeps you Alert and Active

• When there is bright light around, your body produces 2 hormones. Serotonin and cortisol. Serotonin can be thought of as your happy hormone. Where cortisol is known as your stress hormone. Both of these keep you awake and active. When there is an absence of light, melatonin is produced. This is what helps you go to sleep.

Bad Blue Light

Can Lead to Macular Degeneration

• Remember when we said blue light is more intense than other colors? Well, that intensity allows it to travel further into your eye. As a matter of fact, it travels all the way to the back lining of your eye known as your retina. This is not desirable. Repeated and prolonged exposure to blue light can begin to damage the light-sensitive cells of your retina. This leads to macular degeneration, a symptom when unchecked can lead to permanent vision reduction or loss.

Increases Digital Eye Stress

• The intensity of blue light can do more than just affect the retina. The short wavelengths actually cause the light to scatter more across a surface. This scattering effect (also known as Rayleigh scattering) can cause your eyes to not focus as well as they should. It is most common when using digital devices such as cellphones, tablets, and computers.

Despite the benefits of blue light, the negatives can be pretty severe. This is why it is so important to consider wearing proper eye protection when using blue light emitting devices.

I’ve already mentioned the Savi 8220 headset, which uses Bluetooth in its design. But let’s say you want something a little more discreet, that isn’t literally in your face, but can still pick up great audio quality.

The one a recommend for that is the Sennheiser Enterprise Solution Presence UC Binaural Bluetooth Headset, which is just one of the wireless options that are available from this brand.

This option isn’t cheap, but it is comfortable, reliable, and most importantly has great sound quality.

These are also really helpful when you want your hands free while recording or speaking on calls because they stay in place so well without being uncomfortable at all! It’s definitely one of my favorite features.

All right, now we get to the voice recorders. A good voice recorder is far superior to something like an iPhone or Android device, but only if you get a good one.

And in this case, I got the best.

And that is the SONY ICD PX333, by far the best voice recorder in the industry.

There are a lot of good things I could say about this handheld dictation device. For one, it has enough flash memory to store over 1000 hours of recorded speech. That’s a heck of a lot! And if that wasn’t enough, you can expand it with an external memory port.

There is one big drawback of a voice recorder like this one, and that is that it doesn’t sink with a microphone on Bluetooth. There’s a reason for this. In order to get the absolute best audio quality, it’s best that you don’t transfer that audio over Bluetooth, as this can affect the compression and other more technical bits of audio quality. So if you want the best of the best, use a wired headset or microphone, or you can even use the built-in handheld microphone on this voice recorder, which is actually really good.

Honestly, this voice recorder really does give you the best in audio quality and we can’t ask for much more than that.

You may have noticed that the voice recorder I listed above is a tad pricey. Personally, I’m not willing to shell out that kind of dough for something like that when my phone will do just fine, never mind about the decrease in quality.

However, there are a lot of budget options for voice recorders, most of which will do the job quite well.

And in this case I chose the EVISTR 16GB Digital Voice Recorder.

This digital dictaphone has a lot of features that are perfect for someone who just wants to record some audio on the go and doesn’t want or need anything too fancy.

That said, the fact that this microphone has dynamic noise cancellation is really impressive, considering the price. Normally you have to pay a lot more for a feature like that. Plus it plugs easily into the computer to transfer files, which is one of the more important features for me.

Overall, a solid buy.

Buyer’s Guide – What to Look For in the Best Dictation Microphone

Let’s say none of these microphones above work exactly for you, or you want to know a little bit more about why I picked them. If so, then read on, because I’ve got a full list of the most important features (in my opinion anyway) that you should watch out for if you are an author looking to dictate a book.

Microphone Type

First off, is the microphone type. You can kind of get an idea of what I mean by this, by looking up at the options above. Here are a few of your options:

• Desk Mics: these microphones are typically the best in quality, but must remain in a single place, so if you’re looking to be mobile with your dictation, you might want to look elsewhere.
• Headset: these are extremely popular because they allow you to be more mobile, but get the microphone right up by your mouth to get the best quality.
• Lapel Mics: these are also great for mobility, but are also more discreet, and are usually pretty good at picking up the sound of your voice and only your voice.
• Voice Recorders: and of course there’s the voice recorder, which is a device dedicated to…recording your voice. These are great if you plan to transcribe your dictation after the fact, instead of at your computer as you dictate.

Noise Reduction

If you’re recording outside or in a room with lots of ambient noise, then you might want to look for dictation microphone that has some sort of noise reduction feature. That way the sound quality won’t be as affected by external sounds such as wind and traffic.

This is especially important for dictation, as the clearest, most isolated voice recording is the best for accurate transcription.

Sensitivity

This is another feature that can affect the quality of your dictation by either picking up noise in a nice way, or not doing so at all. You might want to look for something called “crystal” sensitivity when it comes to this microphone, which means you get best sound with less ambient noise picked up on the recording.

That said, some microphones pick up everything in the room. This may not be what you want, when transcribing. You want it to pick up just your voice. So making sure you know the difference between a dynamic and a condenser microphone is key to understanding which one is best for you. Incidentally, this is why I don’t recommend the Blue Yeti, because it picks up too much.

USB or XLR?

Generally speaking, a microphone that uses XLR will have better quality audio than the audio that is transferred via USB. On the flipside, USB is far more convenient for most people, as you can just plug it in and go.

Which one you use will depend on your circumstances, but I don’t think that the increased quality of the XLR is worth it for most authors. XLR is better if you’re having a professional recording session, or if you are trying to connect two microphones and record them at the same time.

So for most authors I recommend trying to find a good USB microphone.

Price

Obviously, price is a big factor for a lot of people. On this list I’ve tried to list what are truly the best of the best, in my opinion, with a few budget options out there. If you’re serious about dictation, I recommend not pinching your pennies too much. You get what you pay for, as long as you are smart about it.

To Bluetooth or Not to Bluetooth

Like the debate between USB and XLR ports, it’s generally accepted that recording via Bluetooth is not good to have the best quality, but it is super convenient.

I found that recording over Bluetooth is slightly less quality, and sometimes it does result in inaccurate dictation, but the difference is not big enough to be a huge issue.

In other words, if you want the best, avoid Bluetooth, but for most this will not be an issue.

Are You Using Dragon?

Dragon Professional Individual is the speech recognition software that I use for my dictation, and what I would recommend for most authors. But it is expensive, and many authors probably don’t have that kind of money.

There are, however, several free options like the built in tools for Windows, Mac, and Google Docs. These work great, but if you want them to shine, you need a good mic to work with them.

A good microphone will improve your dictation no matter what program you’re using, but it’s especially important if the quality of that program is subpar.

The TruVision is BY FAR the best reading sunglasses item on the list. It checks all of the style, comfort, durability, and pricing boxes.

If I had one criticism of this pair, it would be that it lacked polarization. But, given the rest of the package, this isn’t a major issue.

Do you even need reading glasses? In all reality, if you think you do… You probably do.

Why?

Because you’re probably seeing (or not) all the signs!

Here are just a few ways to tell if you need reading glasses:

• Are words and images blurry when you are reading? Do you need to hold the book farther away to see them?
• Do you find yourself struggling to read small print in dim light? Or are you purchasing large print books?
• Are you experiencing headaches when reading?
• Or do your eyes hurt when doing anything up close such as typing or sewing?

These are classic signs that you need to be looking for some reading glasses.

Good reading glasses: what to look for when buying

There are many factors you should check before buying a pair of reading glasses.

Style

There are two primary styles of reading glasses.

Full Frame

With full frame glasses, the entirety of the lenses are made with the prescription. This is useful for those who spend a lot of their time reading or doing up close work.

Half Frame

These are the similar to the bifocals Old Ben Franklin created. These are useful for those who only need to look at up close things sparingly. Afterwards you can look above or around the lens for clearer vision for far distances.

Prescription Strength

Reading glasses are normally much less intensive than your standard corrective lenses. They often graduate in terms of .25 power grades starting at extremely low strengths. The lowest is at 1.00 diopter whereas the strongest is at right about 4.00 diopters.

The goal is to choose the one with the lowest number that works for you.

You can determine this by trying on a few pairs and attempting to read a magazine. Hold it about 14 inches away from your face and put on the glasses. Do they help? Is it sharp enough or do you need a little more oomph?

And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but… Your vision is more than likely to only get worse as time goes on. If you start experiencing some of the previous signs again… It’s probably time to up your grade.

The TruVision is BY FAR the best option on this list for best overall. It ticks all the boxes of style, comfort, durability and price.

If I had one small problem with this pair, it would be that it didn’t have polarizaiton. But that isn’t a huge problem given everything else it comes with.

This is what I ended up going with for myself, because I didn’t want to compromise any particular attribute, and this one gave me the best of all worlds.

Even though I just said that I bought the “best overall” glasses, I will say this: I was sorely tempted by these stylish beauties.

I also highly considered putting this pair in the “best style” section as well, but figured we could spread the love with more than one pair with style.

I love these because they’re light weight, but still have the style that I like to look for in a women-only accessory.

These glasses aren’t bifocals, so if you don’t have need of bifocals, then these are definitely the pair for you.

I had to look long and hard for a good option for men, because most that came up were either unisex, or just weren’t that interesting or useful.

So I’ll admit, I bought a pair of Aviator sunglasses a while back. They weren’t reading sunglasses, but were prescription instead. But I still love them, because Aviators are just the best.

If you want something more bold than the options I listed above for men and women, I suggest the Key West reading sunglasses from Readers.com.

They’re actually unisex, so the guys don’t have to be left out, but they’re also really stylish.

The lenses have a dark gray tint, set in a plastic frame, and are generally lightweight.

Ultimately, this is definitely something I might pick up for myself.

If comfort is your top priority, I don’t blame you. Very often, I will buy a product based purely on the comfort factor, even if it sacrifices style, price, etc.

And that’s what I’ve picked here. These versatile reading sunglasses aren’t exactly on the stylish side, but they are definitely the most comfortable and they get the job done.

I highly recommend one of these if all you want is a pair of functioning reading glasses that protect your eyes and don’t feel like they’re squeezing your head in a vice while they do so.

Alright, so we already have a whole post on reading bifocals, because they’re super useful for reading. But what about reading bifocal sunglasses?

There are actually a lot of bifocal reading sunglasses, in fact, there are several more in the list. Polarization is a huge priority for a lot of people, because they want to avoid glare, so I made sure to add one of those on here.

As an added perk, these are also wraparound sports glasses. If that’s a problem, it’s not too hard to find a polarized sunglass that is more your style, but I thought these were generally the best option for polarization.

These glasses are not only polarized, but come with a composite frame and lens, which makes them more comfortable, and they’re very light weight.

I’ll talk a bit more below about what a Full Lens is, but in a nutshell, it’s where you have that full magnification effect from top to bottom. It’s a single vision sunglass.

The Full Lens Reading glasses from grinderPUNCH make a great option if you’re looking for a full-lens pair of reading sunglasses.

They’ve got a nice retro style, and they are GREAT for magnification.

Just don’t expect to use them for good long-distance sight. Get a prescription lens for that.

I love the look of a good wraparound sports sunglasses. So I knew when I started writing this post that I needed to get one of these on the list.

We already had one of these on the list above, in the polarized section, but I thought I’d spread the love and put another on here, because I love them so much.

This pair is different from the above because it’s also a pair of bifocals. So you get the advantage of near-vision eyeglasses combined with more progressive lenses.

Types of Reading Sunglasses

There are a lot of different types of reading sunglasses, and different lens types, everything from blue-light blocking to polarized lenses, and a ton of different shapes.

And that’s not to mention all the different brands out there, which I won’t get into here, but you can find all sorts of resources about that online.

But let’s take a look at the different types of reading sunglasses:

• Polarized Reading Sunglasses: Polarized lenses are meant to reduce glare from the sun on flat surfaces, meaning that if you look at a window, and the sun is shining on that window, you’ll see through it clearer than if you didn’t have polarized lenses. This is particularly useful for driving.
• Bifocal Reading Sunglasses: A standard among reading glasses, bifocal sunglasses contain two lenses, one meant for magnifying near objects, and the other meant for longer-distance viewing.
• Progressive Reading Sunglasses: Progressive sunglasses are a lot like bifocals, meaning they have differing types of vision, one for near-vision magnification, and one for distance vision. But unlike bifocals, they don’t have the annoying lines that divide up the two lenses. Instead, there’s a gradation between the two.
• Full-lens Reading Sunglasses: A full-lens reading glass is one that is 100% magnification. So that little tiny lens you see in the bottom of a bifocal, take that and make the entire lens out of it. These are great for magnification if reading is all you’re doing, but not always great for versatility.

What to Consider When Buying Reading Sunglasses

In general, when I’m selecting sunglasses, there are a few factors that I consider. They are (in this order):

1. Functionality: are they polarized or not? Do they efficiently protect my eyes from UV light? Is the magnification good?
2. Comfort: How do they fit on my face? Do I get a headache from using them? Are they lightweight?
3. Style: Do they look good? Would I feel embarrassed wearing these at the beach or in the park? Do they fit my chosen aesthetic?
4. Price: Are they worth all the extra features? Is it a good bang for my buck? Would it be better to pay extra for a prescription?

These are some of the questions I ask myself when selecting a pair. So I encourage each of you to do the same, and take a look through my list of best reading sunglasses to see which one is right for you.
